What exactly defines Logistics?
It can easily be defined as the flow of goods, which could be information or other resources. These goods, including people and energy are developed from the point of origin until consumption, always under the requirements and need of the consumers. Logistics also has to do with information movement, transportation, warehousing, material-handling, packaging and inventory.
Origins and definition
It is believed that Logistics started in the military, when there was a need to supply themselves with arms, ammunition and rations whenever they had to move in action. Military officers in ancient Greece, Rome and from the Byzantine were called “Logisticas”. These men were responsible of supplying there troops with anything they needed in war but also had a financial responsibility.
A person who practices logistics professionally is called a logistician and these people are certified most of the times by professional associations. When it comes to a business, the logisticians have two jobs to focus on. Either internal or external focus, which means they cover the flow and storage of materials from the time they are made till the time they are consumed.
Mainly a professional logistician is in charge of inventory management, purchasing, transportation, warehousing, consultation and putting everything into order by planning all of these activities beforehand.
A professional logistician has the knowledge of a lot of functions and carries a heavy duty barrier. In order for a business to perform right these people have to coordinate a lot of functions in an organization.
