The global call for environmental consciousness in order to protect the nature from negative effects such as global warming had a tremendous impact on the way the automobile industry develops cars. The “green” consumers and other environmental associations and groups have also played a significant role forcing the industry to produce cars which minimize fuel consumption and have cleaner emissions. One of those developments by the automobile industry and the various car manufactures have been the so called hybrid cars.
Hybrid cars are motorized by two engines (gasoline and electric) which operate in tandem with each other. Currently two kinds of hybrid cars can be found in the market.
The Series:
This type of hybrid uses its first engine (gasoline) mainly to start the car and then to make it stop. The second engine (electric) takes over as soon as the vehicle reaches a specific speed. When this happens the gasoline engine goes off. Another use of the gasoline engine is for recharging the electric motor‘s batteries. Therefore as you understand the two engines will never be used together.
The Parallels:
This hybrid physically is configured the exact way with the series one but it operates in another way. In this case the two engines can start and stop the car nevertheless the electric engine can be used to give power to the car when necessary. These hybrids are suitable for making longer trips.
