How to unclog a toilet

A clogged toilet is an ordinary incident in houses everywhere, especially where there are small children around who love to trough toys and other stuff in the toilet bowl. Big jobs are of course for plumbers, but before you call one, you can try to unclog the toilet yourself. Read this article to learn how you can do it.

  1. Step 1
If your little rascal threw a toy into the toilet, or if a washcloth, or another object has fallen into the toilet by accident, put on some rubber gloves, or fasten with rubber bands some plastic bags on your hands and arms, and start fishing around the toilet for the object.

  2. Step 2
To avoid overflowing, wait until all, or most of the water is drained. When the water is drained, pour a bucket of boiling water into the toilet.

  3. Step 3
Take a toilet plunger, place it at the bottom of the toilet bowl, and push it firmly and quickly up and down a few times.

  4. Step 4
Push a plumber’s auger into the toilet (it is a long snake looking chain with a metal spiral at the end), and keep turning it around until it reaches the object that clogs the toilet. At this point, either try to pull out the object by retracting slowly the auger, or turn the handle of the auger around really quickly to dislodge the object.

Once the object is out, clean the toilet and you are done.

Uunclogging, therefore, the toilet could be a dirty job, but it shouldn’t be a challenge, or cost you any money. So next time your child throws something into the toilet, or something falls in by accident, roll up your sleeves and get to work.
