We all watch TV (except me who is spending all the time writing this article).
If you have an LCD or Plasma TV and you never tinkered with its settings you are probably not getting the best picture out of it.
So, read on and prepare yourself for a better picture.
Know this: The manufacturer settings are usually set too high in order for the TV's picture to stand out from the others in the shop.
- Brightness
When the brightness is too high, your pictures will look washed-out and lifeless. To make this work, first find a dark scene from the first movie that you will put to watch again. Then, set the Brightness all the way to the maximum and then reduce the Colour all the way to black and white. Start bringing the brightness back down until blacks look black, but not so much that you can’t make the details in dark areas of the screen.
- Contrast
Be careful here. If set too high, the contrast could cause eye-strain and even screen-burn on a plasma TV. This time use a bright scene from a movie and, once again, increase the contrast level to its maximum and kill the colour. Now bring the contrast level down until white areas look sharp and details remain visible.
- Colour
If everything on your screen looks orange and garish it means that your colours are way too high. Use a scene which shows flesh (if you are planning to use a porn movie here, make sure that no kids are around) and adjust the level so that (all the porn stars) look natural. Many TV also have colour presets such as “cool”, “warm” and “normal”. You will probably want to leave this at “normal” although for games or movies the warm palette can be more vibrant.
- Sharpness
If you are watching DVDs, it is better not to fiddle with this. But for older material (video tape for example), you may want to increase it for better edge definition. Take care not to overdo it though unless you want images with over-defined outlines.
- Presets
Most TVs are equipped with presets that are designed to optimise picture quality when watching movies or playing games. You can access them at a touch of the remote button (such as standard, game or movie). They offer an easy option, but you are better off doing the tweaking yourself.
- Picture Noise Reduction
If you have this setting, it should be better left switched off for lower-quality picture sources where picture “noise” or interference undermines the performance.

So, now, go back to that movie you watched last month and don’t be surprised hearing yourself saying: “ahaa, aahaaa, ahaaaaaaaa”.
