You will need a couple of drinks per hour for each guest
Make sure you fill with ice some buckets and stock up the cooler
Have plenty of snacks
- If you invite people to your house often, or just a few times a year, it will be useful to have a bartender’s manual around. It will help you to learn how to entertain your guests by making their favoured drinks.
- Some of your guests will drink more and others less. To be sure that you have enough to go around, estimate that you will need a couple of drinks per hour for each guest.
- To estimate how much you need to buy when you are shopping for drinks, keep in mind the following guidelines:
- You get 6 servings out of a 750ml bottle of wine, or champagne.
- You get 17 shots of 45ml out of a 750ml bottle of spirits.
- Υou get one serving out of a can of soft drink, or beer of 355ml.
- Your party can also be ruin if you run out of ice. How much ice do you need? A lot! No one likes a hot drink. To figure out how much you need, estimate a quarter to half a pound of ice per guest. Make sure you fill some buckets and stock up the cooler.
- Have plenty of water, non alcoholic drinks and juices for those who do not drink alcohol, and for those who will be driving home guests who had been drinking.
- Make sure you have enough glasses (a glass per guest, per hour). If you need a lot of glasses and you don’t want to buy them, you can rent glasses from a catering company.
- Have plenty of snacks. When drinking at party, people like snacks such as nuts, chips and finger food. Estimate a couple of handfuls of nuts, or chips per person and about four, or more servings of finger food.
- It is better to have leftover food and drinks, than to run out. Give some of the food leftovers to your guests when they are leaving. Drinks don’t spoil, so you can serve them at the next party.

Considerations
The most expensive wines and spirits are not necessarily the best ones. If you are not sure about what you should buy, ask a bartender, or someone at the liquor store for help.
Learn how certain drinks are mixed and served. This will help you avoid wasting the drinks you buy (and the money you spent) by either diluting them with ice, or using them to mix the wrong cocktail.
