You’re going for a vacation. You made your research and got the best deal on your air ticket and accommodation. That is great, but you want to keep your freedom. Public transport, especially when you are on vacation is not usually helpful or reliable, because you need to adjust your schedule to their schedule and taxis are usually expensive. So you decide to rent a car for your holidays. This guide will give you some advice on hiring a car on your vacations.
Do your research; go online and get quotes from a couple of companies, or you can call a couple of local companies, you never know where you are going to get the better deal.
A lot of rental companies work together with travel agencies and hotels and usually offer deals for both. I will advice you to take the deal if it’s a good one, take advantage of it.
Another point that is good to remember is that you need to check which are the ‘pick up & drop-off times’ and also what is the fuel agreement. Some companies want their cars back with the same amount of fuel they gave it to you; some rent it with a full tank, check that to be sure.
Sometimes rental companies will advice you to buy extra insurance. If your own insurance does not cover you in any way, get the extra insurance, it saves you a lot of trouble if something happens. Ask your insurance agent before leaving home for your vacation; it’s just a phone call.
Decide early on what kind of car you really need. ‘Need’ is the key word here, not what do I think I want; it makes a lot sense, trust me. Forget the late arrival free upgrade to another category trick as almost all of the rental companies do not give free upgrades anymore, you get what you pay for.

All of the above are good and useful, but through my experience of hiring a car when going abroad for my holidays is this; If the rental company asks me for a bit of extra money to get additional insurance, I will pay it unless they quote me with a ridiculously pricy amount. I prefer to pay a bit more for a weeks car rental and be safe than sorry later.
One final thing is to remember to treat the car as it is your own; returning the car in a dreadful condition will not go down well with the car rental company.
