The Conficker virus spreads rapidly, transforms autonomously, infects PCs with Windows and it has not yet shown what is its clear purpose.
- What is it?
The Conficker virus is one of the strangest threats we have seen lately in the digital world. It has already infected millions of computers running Windows while it has the ability to mutate itself autonomously.
- What is its purpose?
Unfortunately, so far no one knows its real purpose. We know that it is trying to infect as many PCs as possible, but just that! It’s like a time bomb waiting to happen!
- When did it show up?
Its first version started spreading on 21 November 2008 exploiting a security hole of Windows. Since then it has updated itself to 4 versions: A-E…and more versions are expected since the virus can update itself through infected PCs that are using P2P Networks.
- How do I know if my PC is infected?
Due to the fact that this virus (a worm to be more specific) has the ability to erase its tracks after penetrating your PC, it is not easy to be detected. It is possible that you are already infected if you cannot update your antivirus or if Windows stopped asking you to update them.
Here is a very simple test to tell you if your PC is infected. Click here to go there. You need to be able to see all 6 images.
You can tell your friends to come here and do the same. Many of them will be infected already.
- How can I protect my PC;
You need to take the usual steps that very few of us follow: avoid websites you don’t know (yeah right!), keep windows up-to-date with the latest updates, install Microsoft’s patch (click here to go there), keep your antivirus up-to-date (this means at the same time that you HAVE to have an antivirus program installed on your PC), do not download files from sources you don’t know and do not open attachments from emails you don’t know.
- What do I do if my PC is already infected?
If the above test shows a positive result of infection, you can go here, here or here to remove the virus.
- Who and how many have been infected;
First of all, many of the infected computers are PCs in foreign offices, embassies, international organizations and mass media organizations. Specialists estimate that in excess of 60 million PCs are infected with the Conficker virus.
- 194,000 euro bounty!
Do you know who wrote this virus; For anyone providing any evidence that leads to the identification and capture of the people who have developed the Conficker virus, Microsoft is giving 194,000 euro reward!
Even though the Conficker virus hasn’t shown any destructive activity since its birth, a late update applied to it by its creators, gave it the ability to download and install the program SpywareProtect2009 which gives you a message that your computer is infected and that you can clean it by paying 49.95 dollars. Let’s see what we shall see!
