You have to consider your cleaning needs when buying one of the two models of vacuum cleaners which are available on the market. In general, both the upright and canister models can perform the same tasks. The only difference is that the upright model is easier to manoeuvre by pushing it in front of you, easier to put in and take out of the closet and needs no set up.
- Cleaning Needs
For a house with carpets the most suitable vacuum would be the upright model which should have a good airflow, carpet adjustable settings and a revolving brush which will allow you to remove dirt and debris caught deep in the fibers of the carpet. A hand-held vacuum with a motor-driven revolving system is ideal if you have stairs; it is light and makes cleaning easy and fast.
For small cleaning jobs in between cleaning days, you will need a portable, lightweight battery powered sweeper or an electric broom.
Invest in a wet/dry or a steam vacuum if you have children or pet around or if you have frequent spilling and staining accidents.
Stem vacuums clean stains and wet/dry vacuums clean up water and debris. Ensure, however that the model you will buy has a good filtration system.
- Prevent allergy attacks
If you suffer from allergies, you may need to spend a little bit more money to buy a vacuum cleaner which incorporates a HEPA filter. HEPA filters have the ability to remove most of the pollen, mites and other allergens during the cleaning process and help prevent allergy attacks.
- What to spend?
A higher price doesn’t guarantee a better vacuum cleaner, but paying less for a vacuum cleaner doesn’t mean that you are getting your money’s worth either. What matters are the warranties, the amps and the strength of the motor, so check these features carefully. Also, if you want your vacuum cleaner to last longer buy a metal vacuum instead of one made of plastic.

- Other important features
Other important features in a good vacuum are a sufficient suction power and an efficient dust-trap system.
Also, a good vacuum should be easy to move around and should allow a stable control. Finally, make sure that the vacuum’s cord is long enough so you will be able to clean at a long distance from the power source. A cord that rewinds automatically into the vacuum will make it easier to store the vacuum.
