In September 2010, more than 1,200 Ferrari 458 Italia were recalled worldwide, following a series of spontaneous fires that destroyed five of the luxury cars; fires were reported in California, Paris, Switzerland, China, as well as other locations.
The Ferrari Company launched an investigation into the five incidents that have been reported and traced the problem to the adhesive that is used in the assembly of the lining of the arch of the wheel and the heat shield.
A Ferrari Company spokesperson told the BBC that the investigation found that when the temperatures of operating are high, the adhesive can overheat, even melt.
When this happens the heat shield deforms and moves, and if it comes into contact with the exhaust, the wheel’s arch liner can catch fire.
All 458 Italia owners were informed about the problem which can be fixed by securing the wheel arch liner with mechanical fasteners instead of adhesive; the fix takes about half a day.
Ferrari said that all their future cars will be modified to replace the adhesive with mechanical fasteners.
