The edges of a genuine leather product look a bit rough
Smell the fabric - genuine leather has a strong scent
Touch the fabric to see whether it feels like plastic
We all buy something made of leather from time to time. But it’s very easy to buy something thinking it’s genuine leather while in fact it's not. Here are 5 ways to spot the difference.
So, here's how you will know whether a leather product is genuine or not.
- The easiest and most obvious way is to look for a label indicating that the product is actually made from genuine leather. Don’t go for the one labeled «Man made product» since these will be fake for sure.
- It’s always good to look at the edging of the fabric. The fake leather will look perfect and have a plastic or foam look to them. On the other hand the edges of a genuine leather product the fabric will look a bit rough and feel a bit rough too.
- Touch the fabric to see whether it feels like plastic. Fake leather has that feeling and is very smoother than genuine leather.
- While feeling the fabric you will notice the pores upon it. When the fabric is real leather these pores have irregular shapes but on fake leather they look like a repeating pattern.
- If you actually smell the fabric you will notice with genuine leather a strong scent which fake leather does not have.

One more thing: take a piece of real leather and a piece of fake leather and place them side by side. Examine them carefully. You will see the differences mentioned above.
Another way, a very interesting one if we may add, is to try to burn the item with your lighter (or the shop owner's lighter :-) ). Real leather does not burn easily or at all. Of course if you are planning to do this make sure you carry a fire extinguisher with you...you know...just in case!
Ok, now we believe you are ready to go out there fearlessly and find that leather jacket or leather skirt you always wanted.
