Easy to set up and doing away with cables, wireless technology is fast gaining in popularity where home networks are concerned. As with any type of technology, its implementation is not entirely hassle-free. But before you toss out your wireless router for a new one, there are a few things you can do to tweak it.
- Positioning
One of the main drawbacks of a wireless signal is its limited strength and range. Where possible, choose a central location to avoid the obstruction caused by walls or objects in your house. Metal and floors also interfere with the signals, and the greater the interference, the weaker your connection.
- Signal boosting
If you’re still stuck, luckily there are ways of boosting a router’s signal. One is to get a wireless repeater, which ideally should be placed halfway between the wireless access point and the computer, giving an instant boost to signal strength. Wireless repeater are available from several manufacturers.

- Upgrading/modifying your equipment
Usually the antennas that come with routers are small in size and are omni-directional, meaning they broadcast a signal in all directions. The downside of that is that a signal that spreads out everywhere by definition does not focus in the direction it’s most needed. To do just that, you need a directional antenna, also known as a “high gain” antenna.
